Frequently Asked Questions:
At what age should my child(ren) receive orthodontic treatment?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children see an orthodontist at age 7. During your consult, our orthodontist will determine if treatment should commence or be delayed until appropriate growth and/or certain teeth have erupted.
Is there an age limit for orthodontic treatment?
Orthodontic treatment is possible for any adult of any age.
If an orthodontic problem, such as malocclusion (a bad bite due to either crowding or too many spaces between your teeth) is left untreated, it may lead to further dental complications.
What is the difference between braces and Invisalign?
Braces come in a selection of the following appliances: interceptive, removable, clear, white and traditional braces. They all require brackets, metal wires and ligature elastics to help align your teeth. With braces, you have to spend extra time and care brushing your teeth to ensure all areas around the braces are plaque free.
Invisalign is the “invisible,” metal-free modern technique to straightening teeth through the use of clear, comfortable plastic aligners. With Invisalign, there is a minimal impact on your everyday life and you are not restricted or limited to certain foods and can continue your normal oral hygiene regime.
At the time of your consult, our orthodontist will determine which treatment is best for you.
How does Invisalign work?
Invisalign is known to be the clear alternate to braces so you can smile during treatment and after. Invisalign works by using a series of clear custom made aligners you wear over your teeth. These aligners will gently and gradually shift your teeth into place where your orthodontist or dentist plans out for you. Approximately every two weeks, you will be wearing a new set of aligners to advance you to the next stage of your treatment.
How long do I have to wear braces/Invisalign for?
The length of treatment is different for each case and depends on your individual needs. Your orthodontist will give you an approximation on the length of your treatment during your consult.
Following the proper care instructions and proper hygiene instructions will result in faster improvements.
How often will I have appointments?
The frequency of your appointments is scheduled depending on your treatment needs. Most patients with braces will be seen approximately every 4-8 weeks; others will be seen more frequent if their treatment requires additional monitoring.
Patients with Invisalign have occasional check-ups with their dentist/orthodontist to monitor your progress.
How do I take care of my orthodontic appliances?
Keeping your regular cleaning and check-up appointments are essential.
Spending extra time brushing your teeth to ensure all areas around the braces are plaque free is necessary. Braces, wires and bands trap food particles and if not cleaned properly may cause plaque build-up, tooth decay and gum disease, which in turn may delay your treatment.
With Invisalign, you remove the alignment trays from your teeth, brush them and place them back in.
Your orthodontist and dental hygienist will help you take care of your braces or Invisalign appliances by providing you with the proper oral hygiene instructions and nutritional counseling.
What will happen during the consult?
During the consult, your orthodontist will answer all your general questions about braces and/or Invisalign. They will discuss your treatment options based on your individual needs and determine if you are a good candidate for either braces or Invisalign.
For a proper diagnosis, a panoramic radiograph will be taken or if you have had one taken within the last 6 months, please bring the radiograph with you at the time of your consult. Photographs of your front and side profiles will be taken as well.
If you are considering Invisalign, impressions will also be to create a 3-D image of your teeth. This will show you a virtual representation of how your teeth will move at each stage of your treatment and what their end result will be.
Also, please bring your insurance card to determine whether you may have orthodontic coverage in order for us to give you a more accurate estimate of your costs.
